Alternative Electronics is based around industrial music and related sub-genres, the bands making these styles of music and the gear they use to do so. Sections of the site include:

Articles - short articles about the electronic music equipment used by alternative electronic musicians.

Gear - descriptions of synthesizers, effects processors, software and other music equipment used by alternative electronic bands. The description of each piece of gear includes a list of artists who have used it and in some cases, information about where it can be purchased, including average closing prices from the online auction site eBay.

Manufacturers - companies producing music gear used by alternative electronic bands and artists.

Bands - Equipment lists from hundreds of electronic bands and musicians.

Genres - the most widely-used pieces of music equipment for each alternative electronic sub-genre is listed according to the number of bands that use them. Sub-genres include electro-industrial, EBM, rhythmic noise, synthpop, IDM, dark ambient, breakcore, industrial metal, industrial rock, noise and digital hardcore.

Charts - every month the total number of Last.fm users who have listened to each band tracked on Alternative Electronics is calculated and the bands with the largest monthly increase in listeners can be found here.
