The Korg Prophecy was part of the first wave of virtual analog modeling synthesis of the 1990's. The idea was based on recreating the sound of analog synthesizers by using digital emulations of analog waveforms. However the Prophecy goes beyond simply imitating analog synthesizers; it's also capable of recreating acoustic instruments and offers a variety of new and unique synthesis techniques.

While the sounds of the Prophecy compare well with other synths in its class, it has a reputation for being extremely complex to program due to the overwhelming number of editable parameters available. The small LCD screen further complicates patch editing. Nonetheless, its unique architecture has ensured a place for the Prophecy as one of the most-used synthesizers in alternative electronic music.
