Electronic Body Music, more commonly referred to as EBM, is a genre of alternative electronic music with a history spanning over three decades. The classic EBM sound can be characterized by minimal synth and rhythm structures combined with "clean" production techniques. Music equipment used often in the early years of EBM included the Korg MS-20, Roland SH-101 and the Emulator series of samplers from E-mu. Gear used by modern EBM musicians reflects the growing importance of virtual modeling synthesis and software synthesizers. The Access Virus, Clavia Nord Lead and Roland JP-8000 are all popular hardware synthesizers widely used for EBM along with software such as Native Instruments FM7 and Absynth.
